What the hey…?

I just saw a Lego Star Wars commercial that said “Help protect the galaxy with the new Republic Attack Cruiser!”  And they specifically mention that it comes with a Lego Chancellor Palpatine figure.

Palpatine.  Secretly known as Darth Sidious, future Emperor of all things evil.  The guy who engineered the Clone Wars in the first place as an excuse to give himself more power and bring about the downfall of the peaceful Republic.  This by them is protecting the galaxy?

I mean, sure, it’s hard to reconcile the needs of toy promotion with any kind of moral ambiguity.  But it’s one thing to paint Anakin Skywalker, the future Darth Vader, as a hero, because at least he’s still basically a flawed good guy at the time of the Clone Wars.  Palpatine, on the other hand, was a bad guy from the start.  The benevolent senator/chancellor was nothing but a cover for a guy working to tear the galaxy apart for his own selfish ambitions.

Even aside from that, why would a head of state be commanding a warship in battle?  (I mean, it’s a toy, so it’s going to be in battle in play scenarios, not sitting in the dock while the chancellor shows up to do a photo op.)  Wouldn’t Admiral Yularen be a better choice?

You’re reminding me of a Hallmark tree ornament I remember seeing in their local store here in east Ottawa some years ago: the Death Star.

    Not kidding.

“‘Cause nothin’ says ‘Christmas tree’ like a genocide weapon!”

Hey Christopher, it could be argued that the attack cruiser was “meant” to protect the Galaxy… And the Lego Chancellor Palpatine figure is just here to play the bad guy! Or maybe they couldn’t catch up with all the nonsens in the (latest) movies and just thought it was a catchy phrase ? !lol!

PS : Thanks to David Mack for your blog adress. Since you are one of my favorite star trek writter too i can’t wait to read your thought on many subjects.
